A roof replacement can change the appearance of a home, but some of the most important work happens in places that are easy to overlook. This West Knoxville project combined a complete asphalt roof replacement with added attention around the home’s large brick chimney.
We installed CertainTeed Landmark shingles in Burnt Sienna, added new color-matched counter flashing at the chimney, and built a cricket to help direct water around the chimney instead of allowing it to collect behind it.
Replacing an Aging Roof in West Knoxville
This West Knoxville home sits on a heavily wooded lot with mature trees surrounding much of the roof. Before work began, the existing asphalt shingles showed their age across the large roof surface. Leaves, small branches, and other tree debris had also accumulated in several areas.
The home has a long main roof with several intersecting sections. That means there are multiple valleys, hips, and transitions where careful installation matters.
Once the existing roofing materials were removed, our crew prepared the roof for the new system. The construction photos provide a good look at the scale of the job. They also show the CertainTeed RoofRunner synthetic underlayment installed beneath the new shingles.
CertainTeed Landmark Burnt Sienna Shingles
For the new roof, the homeowners selected CertainTeed Landmark shingles in Burnt Sienna.
Burnt Sienna was a natural fit for this home. Its mix of warm brown tones works well with the existing brick, Tudor-style exterior details, and wooded setting. Instead of changing the character of the house, the new shingles give the existing color palette a cleaner, refreshed appearance.
Landmark shingles use a dual-layer design to create more depth than a basic three-tab asphalt shingle. They are also available as part of CertainTeed’s broader roofing system, allowing the shingles and underlying components to work together.
New Chimney Flashing and Cricket
The brick chimney was one of the areas that deserved extra attention.
Chimneys interrupt the natural path water takes down a roof. On the uphill side, water can run directly toward the chimney during heavy rain. For this project, we built a new cricket behind the chimney. The small raised roof section splits the water and sends it toward either side of the chimney.
We also installed new color-matched counter flashing around the chimney. The flashing provides the transition between the roofing system and masonry while blending with the new Burnt Sienna roof.
These details may take up a small portion of the roof, but they are an important part of managing water around one of its largest penetrations.
A Finished Roof That Fits the Home
The completed roof keeps the warm, traditional appearance of this West Knoxville home while giving it a fresh roofing system from end to end. From the street, the Burnt Sienna shingles complement the brick and brown trim. From above, the new roofing creates a clean, consistent surface across the home’s many roof sections.
For us, projects like this are about more than laying new shingles. The flashing, valleys, underlayment, chimney details, and other transitions all deserve the same attention as the parts of the roof everyone can see.
