From the ground, this Maryville home still looked beautiful. The brick exterior, mature trees, and sprawling roofline gave it plenty of character. A closer look told a different story.
The shingles had darkened with age. Heavy streaking covered large sections of the roof. Debris collected along some of the lower slopes. Most concerning were the two chimneys. Old flashing repairs surrounded the brick, with exposed metal, sealant, and signs of past water exposure.
Earlier this month, we gave the home a fresh roofing system and rebuilt those vulnerable chimney areas.
A Roof With Many Moving Parts
This was no simple roofline. The home has several large sections, dormers, valleys, intersecting slopes, covered porches, and two brick chimneys. Each transition creates another place where water must be directed correctly.

Max Def Weathered Wood Brings Back the Detail
The homeowners selected CertainTeed Landmark PRO dimensional shingles in Max Def Weathered Wood. This color blends warm brown, gray, and tan tones. Those shades work well with the home’s red brick, light siding, and wooded setting.
The Max Def color blend also brings out the home’s architectural details. The dormers, hips, ridges, and broad roof sections now have more depth. Instead of one dark surface, the roof has a natural pattern that changes slightly with the light.
The result feels warm and established. It fits the home without making it look too new or out of place.
Custom Counter Flashing Protects Both Chimneys
The chimney areas needed special attention. The old flashing showed layers of past repair work. Metal pieces and heavy sealant had been added around the brick, but the finished system was uneven and worn.
We installed new custom bronze counter flashing around both chimneys. Counter flashing covers the upper edge of the roof flashing and helps direct rainwater onto the shingles. It also creates a cleaner transition between the brick and roofing system.
The bronze color was chosen to coordinate with the brick and the other exterior metals. It gives both chimneys a finished appearance while addressing two of the roof’s most vulnerable areas.
Bronze Gutters Complete the New System
A large roof moves a lot of water during an East Tennessee storm. This home needed gutters that could handle that volume across its long roof edges.
We installed new 6-inch seamless gutters in bronze. We also added gutter guards to help keep leaves and other debris from collecting inside the system.
The bronze gutters frame the roofline and connect visually with the new chimney flashing. Their darker finish also creates a clean contrast against the home’s lighter trim.
A Fresh Start for This Maryville Home
This project began with an aging roof and chimney flashing that had seen several attempts at repair. It ended with a complete system that looks consistent from every angle.
